In this article, I will answers these questions from two approaches, a common sense approach and a scientific approach.
I have resisted writing articles about scientific evidence, because most scientific evidence is inconclusive, or may I be bold and say that all scientific evidence is inconclusive. Starting now, I am no longer resisting, because I read so much scientific garbage that I must begin to set the record straight. Lots of information out there is written based on someone trying to sell you something.
In my view, when reading articles on these subjects, it seems as the writers make free radicals and anti-oxidants out to be a new thing that recently occurred in our bodies, in nature and in the atmosphere. Free radicals and anti oxidants have existed for millions of years. Free radicals are a natural occurrence in the body. They are formed when food is oxidized. The dictionary definition of Oxidation is, the process of oxidizing; the addition of oxygen to a compound with a loss of electrons; always occurs accompanied by reduction.
The dictionary definition of free radical is, an atom or molecule that bears an unpaired electron and is extremely reactive, capable of engaging in rapid chain reactions that destabilize other molecules and generate many more free radicals: in the body, deactivated by antioxidants, uric acid, and certain enzyme activities. Now what does that mean? At this point you can either study chemistry for four years or rely on your wisdom and intelligence. The answer begins in the part of the dictionary definition of a free radical, “deactivated by antioxidants”.
Note that most food consist of Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N) and the (O) is everywhere. Free radicals are created all the time. When you eat real food, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes the free radical is neutralized; meaning that the extra electron is made complete with a complimentary neutron.
The problem occurs when you eat man made food and processed food. These foods do not naturally neutralize the extra electron because these foods are not natural. They are synthesized or chemically treated. When free radicals are not neutralized they will travel the body looking for an extra neutron to bond to so it is complete. This is what a cell gone wild is. This traveling around the body is what can be the beginning causes of cancer. The free radicals start to bond to each other and cause out of control growths. That’s the scientic approach. The common sense approach is eating foods in their most natural state. The way mother nature intended it to be.
Based on this knowledge, I recommend eating real food. Real food will prevent cells from going wild. Real food will give you energy and vitality. Real food will keep you living a healthy long life. If you eat real food or start to eat real food, there will be no need to eat or drink anything pumped up as an anti oxidant. Other things to do to prevent cells gone wild is to exercise, drink lots of water, get plenty of rest and enjoy the sun.
My top ten super foods are all antioxidants. They fresh vegetables, fruits, wheatgrass juice and fresh green juices, almonds, flax seeds, olive oil, lentils, brown rice, root vegetables and quinoa. Eat them often.
Drink only water and herb teas.
My top ten disaster foods include, dairy, foods with nitrates to include bacon, hot dogs and colds cuts, shellfish, saturated animal fats, candy, junk food to include all chips and like snacks, packaged processed foods, can foods, supplements and diet food to include energy bars.
Stay away from stimulants to include soda, coffee, sweetened beverages, cigarettes, marijuana, over the counter, recreational and prescription drugs, chocolate and alcohol. All stimulants eventually become depressants and are partially responsible for the Diabetes epidemic going on. More about this later in my next cells gone wild article.
