Is addiction a part of life? Is conquering our addictions part of our growth process? It seems as though every human has at least one addiction. Addictions, to include food, sex, self improvement, alcohol, cigarettes, over the counter and prescription drugs, gambling, to name a few are such a common thing that I wonder if it is part of our growing process to conquer them. Or is all about the food we put in our bodies?
In my research I have always been intrigued by the connection to serotonin levels in the brain and addiction. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter ( ++++ ) responsible for communicating the various needs of the body between the brain cells and the peripheral ( ++++ ) cells of the nervous system. Serotonin is one of the major neurotransmitters that affects mood.
Normal serotonin levels = good moods, well being, energy, productiveness and contentment. This allows you to et a good night sleep and to awaken happy and energized.
Constant low levels of serotonin generate states to include being depressed, apathetic, lethargic, decreased memory, chronic insomnia, decreased memory, lose of interest in life and body pain.
Quick changes in Serotonin levels = anxiety, rage, agitation and inability to focus.
Now, you might ask, “How do I maintain normal levels of serotonin in my body?”
The answer to this is by eating a balanced whole foods, exercise and to discontinue use of stimulants. Before we address these issues let me talk about how Serotonin are affected bio chemically in your body.
Processed foods to include white flour, white sugar, man made sugars (corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, ++++ )
